Post-operative Anemia After Major Surgery: a Brief Review

Abstract Purpose of Review Anemia is a very common complication in the post-operative period. Post-operative anemia associated with poor outcomes including but not limited to infections, increased length stay, circulatory overload, and mortality. The strategy patient blood management focuses on three pillars that include detection treatment pre-operative anemia; reduction peri-operative loss; harnessing optimizing patient-specific physiological reserve anemia. Recent Findings Multiple studies surgical patients have been conducted study various methods advances techniques also studied minimize loss. There widespread consensus use intravenous iron hospitalized after major surgery. Summary We discuss most causes focusing measures reduce loss increase red cell (RBC) mass.
